Radix Astagali (HuangQi) Recipes

Origin

Astragalus Root is the dried roots of Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch) Bge. astragalus root Radix Astagali (HuangQi) Recipesvar. mongholicus (Bge.) Hsiao or Astragalus membranaceus (Fish.) Bge. The drug is collected in psring and autumn, removed from rootlet and root stock, dried in the sun.

Action and Indications

To reinforce qi and strengthen the superficial resistance, and to promote the discharge of pus and the growth of new tissue.

Radix Astragali (processed with honey): to reinoforce qi and invigorate the function of the spleen

Deficiencu of qi with lack of strength, anorexia and stools, sinking of the spleed qi manifested by chronic diarrhea, prolapse of the rectum, hematochezi and abnormal uterine bleeding; spontaneous sweating due to weakened superficial resistance; edema due to deficiency of qi; abscess difficult to hurst or heal; anemia; diabetes caused by internal heat; albuminuria in chronic nephritis; diabetes melitus.

Radix Astragali (processed with honey): Deficiency of Qi with lack of strength, anorexia and loose stools.

Recipes of Medicated Diet

1. Shen Qi Bu Gao (Astragalus Root and Ginseng Electuary)

[Ingredients]

100g Radix Astragali (huang qi); 60g Radix Ginseng(Ren shen); 50g Radix Angelica Sinensis(dang gui); 20g Chinese date; 100g brown sugar

[Preparation]

Decoct huang qi, ren shen, dang gui twice, take 500ml condensed decoction. Boil the chinese date in gentle heat until it become pappy. Put the jujube paste into the condensed decoction, boil them and add honey to make medicinal paste. Administered with water. Take 20ml paste each time. three times per day.

[Effects and indications]

Invigorating spleen and tonifying kidney, nourishing blood and regulating menstruation.

Teenage girls’ kidney deficiency manifested by hypomenorrhea, light-colored menstruation, lumbar and back soreness, pain in the heel, vertigo, tinnitus, lower abdominal coldness, pale longue and weak, heavy pulse.

2. He shou Wu Huang Qi Ji dan Bao (Egg Boiled in Fleece-flower Root and Astragalus Root Soup)

[Ingredients]

60g he shou wu, fleece-flower root ( Radix polygoni multiflori); 20~30g Radix Astragali (huang qi); 20~30g Fu ling (Sclerotium poriae cocos); 2 eggs; some di huang(radix rehmanniae glutinosae);

[Preparation]

Boil all the ingredients in 500ml water. Shell the boiled egg, and then boil it in the soup for another 5 minutes. Take the egg and drink the soup once every morning and evening.

[Effects and indications]

Nourishing liver and kidney. Qi and Blood deficiency manifested by premature grey hair, etc.
