Flos Caryophylli (Dingxiang) –Ding Xiang Clove

Clove is the dried flower of Eugenia caryophllata Thunb. The drug is collected when it turns from green to brick-red, and dried in the sun.

Description and Identification
Pestle-shaped, 1 ~ 2cm long. Corolla globular,0.3 ~ 0.5cm in diameter, petals 4,imbricated, dark brown to brownish—yellow,enclosing stamens and style. After rubbing,showing numerous yellow, granular anthers. Calyx tube cylindrical,slightly flattened,sometimes slightly curved,0.7 ~ 1.4cm long,0.3 ~ 0.6cm in diameter,reddish-brown or dark brown,sepals 4,triangular,occurring at the upper part, separating in cruciform. Texture hard,oily. Odour,strongly aromatic; taste,pungent and numb.

Chemical ingredients
It has naphtha which is clove oil.In the oil,there are mostly eugenol,acetyleugenol, (3 -caryophyllene, Eugenone, Eugenin, etc.

Property and Channel Tropism
Property : pungent in taste .warm in nature. Channel tropism: splleen,stomach,kidney.

Action and Indications
To warm the spleen and stomach, to regulate the adverse flow of the stomach qi,and to restore the kidney yang.
vomiting,hiccup,poor apptite and diarrhea due to stomach cold; impotence,prospermia and soreness of waist due to kidney Yang deficiency.

Place of Production
It is mainly produced in Tazania,Malaysia,Indonesia. It is also planted in the Guangdong province in China.

Recipes of Medicated Diet

1. Ding Xiang Huo Guo
Ding Xiang Hotpot

[Ingredients]
6g ding xiang,ding xiang cloves ( Flos Caryophylli )
200g clam
100gfish ball
2 cuttlefish
100g shelled fresh shrims
vermcelli,celery,beancurd,Chinese onion and monosodium glutamate as needed
4 bowels of chicken soup

[Preparation]
Wash the clam and shelled fresh shrims for later use. Slice the fish ball. Clean cuttlefish and blanch them in the boiling water. Divide cuttlefish in to two pieces. Soak vermicelli in hot water untile it is soft. Section the celery and Chinese onion. Cut the beancurd. Put half of all the ingredients to the pot and add two bowels of chicken soup, suitable amount of wine and salt. Boil it over strong fire for 5 to 6 minutes. The hot pot is done. Add the other half of the ingredients while eating the hot pot.

[Effects and Indications]
1 Warming kidney and reinforcing Yang,warming the middle energizer and activiating qi flowing.
Spiritlessness and weakness, strengthening the body and getting rid of fatigue.

2. Ding Xiang Jiang Tang
Ding Xiang Cloves and Ginger Candy

[ Ingredients ]
5g ding xiang,ding xiang cloves ( Flos Caryophylli)
30g sheng jiang,ginger ( Rhizoma Zingiberis Officinalis Recens )
250g cane sugar

[Preparation]
Grind ding xiang into fine powder. Chop sheng jiang. Simmer cane sugar with suitable amount of water in a pot over mild fire untile the syrup thickens. Then add ding xiang powder, chopped sheng jiang and stir. Simmer untile sugar silk can be drawn and the syrup does not stick to the hands. Pour the syrup onto an oiled-plate. When the syrup cools,cut into little cubes.

[Effects and Indications]
Warming stomach,arresting hiccough and vomiting.

[ Ingredients ] Hiccough due to stomach cold.
