Radix Pseudostellariae (Taizishen)–Heterophylly Falsestarwort Root

Heterophylly Falsestarwort Root

Origin

Heterophylly Falsestarwort Root is the dried tuber of Pseudostellaria heterophylla (Miq.) Pax ex Pax et Hoffm. The drug is collected in autumn when stem and leaf mostly withered, washed clean, removed from rootlet, treated with boiling water for a moment, then dried in the sun, or dried in the sun directly.

Description and Identification

Slenderly fusiform or slat-shaped, slightly curved, 3 ~ 10cm long, 2 ~ 6mm in diameter. Root-stock with stem scars, externally yellowish-white, relatively smooth but slightly wrinkled longitudinally, with rootlet scars at dent. Texture hard and fragile, fracture even, yellowish-white and horny, or whitish and starchy. Odour, slight; sweetish in taste.

Chemical Ingredients

palmitic acid, linoleic acid, glycerol 1-monolinolate; the others such as sugar, amino acid, and microelements, etc.

Property and Channel Tropism

Property: slightly bitter and sweet in taste; neutral in nature.
Channel tropism: spleen and lung.

Mel (Honey)

Honey

Origin:

Honey is a saccharine fluid deposited by  Apis cerana Fabricius or Apis mellifera Linnaeus. The drug is collected from spring to autumn, and filtered.

Description and Indentification:

Translucent, lustrous and viscid, white to pale yellow or orange yellow to yellowish-hrown, white granular crystals gradually separated out on keeping or on cooling. Odour, aromatic, taste, very sweet.

Relative density Dissolve any crystal on a water bath at a temperature below 60C, if the crystal has separated out in the samples examined, mix well, cool to 25C and carry out the method for the determination of relative density, not less than 1.349.

Action and Indications:

To replenish the spleen and stomach, to relieve dryness, to alleviate pain, and to counteract toxicity.

Epigastric pain alleviated after meal or by pressing: dry coungh; constipation; external use for sores, scalds and burns.

Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae (Dang shen)

Dang shen

Origin:

Dang shen is the dried roots of Condonopsis pilosula (Franch). Nannf., Codonopsis pilosula Nannf. var. modesta (Nannf.) L.T. Shen or Codonopsis tangshen Oliv. The drug is collected in automn, washed clean, and dried in the sun.

Chemical Ingredients:

It has many components such as polysaccharide, amino acid, microelement, etc.

Property and Channel Tropism:

Property: sweet in taste, neutral in nature.

Channel tropism: spleen, lung.

Action and Indications:

To reinforce qi and invigorate the function of the spleen and the lung.

Weakness of the spleen and the lung manifested by shortness of breath, cough, palpitation, anorexia, loose stools, diabetes caused by internal heat.

Fructus Jujubae (Chinese Date)

Chinese date

Chinese Date is dried ripe fruit of Ziziphus jujuba Mill. The drug is collected in autumn when ripe, and dried in the sun.

Chemical Ingredients:

Plenty of vitamin A, C and B2, etc. 14 kinds amino acid such as glutamic acid, lysine, arginine, etc. Organic acid, malic acid, tartaric acid, flavone and 36 microelement such as phosphor, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron etc.

Action and Indications:

To tonify the spleen and replenish qi, to nourish blood, and to ease the mind.

Anorexia, lassitude and loose stools in deficiency syndromes of the spleen, hysteria in women.

Recipes of Medicated Diet:

1. Confected Logan Aril and CHinese Date

[Ingredients]:

250g longan aril

250g fresh Chinese date

250g honey and some ginger juice

[Preparation]:

Boil the washed longan aril and chinese date over strong fire. Turn to mild fire when it is 70% done. Then add ginger juice and honey. Stir well. When it is well done, let it cool. Transfer the soup to a container and seal it. Take 6 to 8 longan aril and Chinese date each time, three times a day.

Semen Euryales (Gordon Euryale Seed)

The Chinese name is QianShi.

Gordon Euryale Seed

Origin:

Gordon Euryale Seed is dried kernel of ripe seed of Euryale ferox Salisb. The ripe fruits is collected in late autumn and early winter and peeled, the drug is taken out, washed, removed from hard shell (testa), and dried in the sun.

Chemical Ingredients:

It has a lot of starch. And it also has protein, fattiness oil, carbohydrates, and microcrystalline calcium, phosphor, iron, and  vitamin C.

Action and Indications:

To benefit the kidney and arrest seminal discharge, to invigorate the function of the spleen and relieve diarrhea, and to remove damp and check excessive leukorrhea.
